As good as it gets

We sailed this weekend.

With one thing and another we’ve not left Westhaven since Easter so with a free weekend, no family commitments and no weather warnings we had to head out. So after gym and some grocery shopping we left Westhaven at lunch time yesterday. A lunch of Sabato bread, preserves and cheeses is a treat at any time, but especially so when sailing past the city. Auckland is spectacular from the harbour. Not much wind so we motored up the harbour and were at anchor in Issy Bay in time for an afternoon nap.

For supper we had sausage and mushroom bake, with baked potatoes and cauliflower – yum.

This morning, Rob made breakfast – out standard toasted bagels with Philly and raspberry jam. We had a lazy morning reading, watching the car ferry disgorge some trucks onto to Rangitoto, drinking coffee, and watching the other boats up anchor and head home. Eventually we decided to do the same.

With Zinkwazi pointing into the wind at anchor we started the donk, hoisted the main, pulled up the pick brought her around and let out the genny. Watching our new, very white sails fill and feeling Zinkwazi glide along I thought – this is as good as it gets.

Then Rob turned off the donk so the only sound was the sea swishing under Zinkwazi’s hull I though, no this is as good as it gets.

As we cleared Emu point, the wind picked up and Zinkwazi responded – lifting her skirts in a good run. And that is as good as it gets. Wind did not last and we had to turn donk back on, but the feeling of a sail boat responding to the wind is like no other.

And summer is coming……..

I am so jealous. Hopefully we’ll be back east soon so Mark and I can pop down for weekends on Zinkwazi.
