We got out the big scary sail today!

Gull-winging under Main and MPS.

Day was beautiful with the promise of summer to come. But with a high sitting over the North Island there was not much wind and flags on harbour bridge were half-heartedly flapping about. We dropped mooring ropes just after 10:00 and headed out. Greg, my middle son was on board with us. Once we’d cleared the breakwater we hoisted the main and then (big breath) out big MPS (multi purpose sail – kind of a very light genoa). Wind was very shifty so Rob and Greg tried various sets before we got a good set. And then with main out to port (with a preventer on boom) and MPS to starboard we were off – getting up to 6 knots in 10 – 12 knots of wind.

We had a good sail down the harbour and into Isslington Bay where we dropped the pick. For the first time ever in Issie Bay (well known to be sticky mud) anchor did not set and we had to lift and drop again.  Lunch was soup (tinned) with sour-dough bread (bought) so no recipes today.

After lunch we all wanted to skive off and have a nap, but Rob had to sail the boat home so only Greg & I got to loll about and read our books. Wind was getting up so MPS was put away and we sailed home on main and iron spinaker as wind was on the nose.

It looked like anything that could float was out on the water so we slotted into the queue going into Westhaven and were back in out berth by 4:00. A quick tidy up and check that everything was closed, turned off or locked because we are off to visit the wizard (of Oz) for a few weeks and Zinkwazi will have to look after herself. I dropped Rob home and then headed to Hamilton where I taught myself to upload images to this blog.

So a good day.
