Paradise Bay, Urupukapuka Island, Bay of Islands – Tuesday 4 January,2011

We put up the main – but just for show, in 2-3 knots wind we were not sailing anywhere! Not a ripple on the sea, just a big oily swell which seems to set off my very mild sea sickness. Oh well a day in the cock pit sticking my head into the wind like a dog in a car while ordering Rob to fetch and carry because I was not going below for all the tea in China is not all bad. We made good time under motor and dropped the pick at about 4:00 p.m.

A pod of 3 dolphins swam in our bow wave for well over half an hour – they are very special creatures. Rob was keen to video them so hung over the pulpit aiming the vid camera at then for a good 15 minutes, pity he forgot to turn it on first.

Planned super is still swimming in the sea – we hooked up a nice tuna just north of Tutukaka (skipjack I think) but it slipped the hook, waved goodbye and was off. So we defrosted steak. We bought a new BBQ that we can use as a smoker as well as a BBQ. It is a Cobb and uses compressed copra, or special charcoal fuel or charcoal briquettes and works very well. Is not big so is ideal for boat but (in relays) we baked potatoes, grilled eggplant, courgettes and mushrooms and finally the steak. Simple but very delicious.

I’ve been wondering – do you think that if I put a Factor 100 sunblock over my Factor 25 face cream I get the equivalent of Factor 125? Or 100 because it is the top layer? Or an average because they must mix? At least I don’t think they neutralize each other or I’d be burnt to a crisp and I only have some wind burn (I bet dogs get wind burnt gums in cars). There is never enough info on the boxes is there?

Did you know that recent evidence indicates that caffeine and caffeine sodium benzoate increase UVB-induced apoptosis both in topical and oral applications. In mice, UVB-induced hyperplasia was greatly reduced with administration of these substances. Although studies in humans remain untested, caffeine and caffeine sodium benzoate may be novel inhibitors of skin cancer. Have a coffee, or an ice-coffee!

Wicked!!! I’ve been playing golf – suddenly got a tan and Letitia reckons my hair is blonder!!! The trip sounds fantastic. You write very well Maureen, very well. Shall we swap jobs? I think the easiest thing about balancing the books is to just say no to people. No, you can’t have that; No, you don’t need that; No, we don’t have enough money for that or there is simply NO NO NO, because I said so.
Then to do my job you just say, yes, not a problem; consider it done; I can do that just give me five minutes.

I like this kind of writing – can say whatever I want. I’d be very bad at your job would revert to type and say NO.
