Friday 18 April 2008 Whangaroa

April 20th, 2008 · No Comments

The sun was shining when we woke and there wasn’t anything we really wanted to do in Mangonui so we decided to head south. Friday is club night at Whangaroa Boating Club so this seemed to be a good enough reason to head to Whangaroa.

We packed and settled all our debts (mainly in beer & wine) and dropped the mooring at mid-day. This was not without some trepidation as we had only tested gearbox fix on the mooring. Motored out of Mangonui and once clear of entrance hoisted about 75% of genoa. Once we rounded Berghan Pt wind was on forward starboard quarter. Forecast was for 15 knots but wind was stronger than that, probably 18-20 knots with gusts of up to 24 knots. So we made good way, motor-sailing at first and then just on the genoa.

And by 3:00 we had dropped sail and were safely through the Whangaroa entrance. First stop was Viagra Falls to top up water tanks. Viagra Falls is fantastic – it is a water buoy, we  sail up to it, pick up the mooring ropes, unwind hose, fill tanks and put $5 in the honesty box. Next we head up-harbour and anchor off the boating club wharf.

Rob has to do a running repair on an oar – this starts with him drinking a beer so he can use can as a splint. One of the better reasons for drinking beer. Once ashore we return the surplus laundry we got when we had laundry done, shower at the boating club and then order drinks. Beer is bad (although the supper I made under it’s influence yesterday was very good) but scotch & soda is gooooooood.

We ate at the boating club Rob had lamb shanks and I had scotch fillet (kinda matching my meal to my drink). Very good meals.

Forecast is for weather to worsen late tomorrow so we head south early. About a 6-hour trip to BoI and we want to be anchored before wind gets up. So anyone from Waikato reading this – pray for good weather because my complicated plan that gets me to Hamilton on Monday relies on us getting to BoI tomorrow.
