Islington Bay, Auckland – 22-1-10

Wind is up in 30’s and low 40’s so we’ve stayed put. Had a very relaxing day.

I broke down all our rods – dunno how two people can have so much fishing kit and catch so little. Took everything out of our port under-cockpit storage and tidied it up – where we keep our rods and reels, snorkels, wet suits, spare anchors etc. Washed reels and put everything away.

Exhausting – so had to have a 2-hour nap.

Have not been to shops since Russell so having to get creative in cooking. Still plenty of meat in freezer and good stock of tinned and dry stuff but fresh fruit and vegetables almost gone. Might have to have tequila with lemon and salt to avoid scurvy.

With plenty of time I made a chicken curry, rice and indian bread. Growing up in South Africa with a big Indian community I learnt to make and enjoy hot curries. The style is quite different from usual styles available in New Zealand – usually tomato based and hot. But, much to Rob’s relief, I resisted loading in the chilli and ended up with a mild slow cooked coconut cream chicken curry – but very tasty. The roti though was exactly as I remember it – I don’t have a recipe so was guessing ingredients and quantities but they turned out as good as Kay’s (my sister who makes the best roti and curries). Cooked roti in my big non-stick fry pan as I don’t have a griddle – worked very well.

Wind has eased off a little and we did think about leaving tonight, but would have wind against tide and sea is already rough so we’ll leave early tomorrow and be back in our home berth for breakfast – we are only an hour and a half from Westhaven so not a big deal.

We’ll wash Zinkwazi down and pack up. I’ll be doing washing for next week! Rob is not happy with our alternator so will take it off and get it checked during week. Next weekend is Auckland anniversary and we always try to get out on water – as does everyone who has anything that floats. But there is lots to see and after a week at work I’ll need the break.
