Smokehouse Bay, Great Barrier Island – Saturday 2-1-10

January 2nd, 2010 · No Comments

We are sitting in the cockpit on a perfect evening drinking coffee liquers. Tide has just turned and all the boats are starting to swing around and face in different directions. Normally yachts all lie in the same direction and so do launches but often not same direction as yachts.

I think it was Meatloaf who sang two out of three ain’t bad. Well we dicided we were going to:
fill our water tanks,
dump our rubbish
and catch fish for tea.
So we are all clean and showered, have an empty rubbish bin (thank goodness – lost it overboard when washing it and had to take to tender to recover it) and we had mushroom, bacon and cheese omlettes for tea.

There are NO fish in the sea. But we do have bait. Went ashore and filled up tender tank with petrol, checked out the boating club (yeah, yeah – had a few beers) bought milk, bait and had ice blocks.

And as I typed “there are no fish in the sea” a school comes through – are still plopping around us. Naturally we leap up and grab rods – I only have my small bait rod rigged but Rob has a spinner on his rod. No interest in my rig and Rob is still casting. Not that I am holding my breath.

Tomorrow we catch fish.
