Woolshed Bay, Coromandel Harbour

Woolshed Bay is delightful but does not have good radio or cellphone coverage so we were unable to get a weather forecast this morning. We set off early but sea was had a big chop and wind gusting to 18 knots was on the nose. We listened to weather and with a worsening forecast and prospect of a long slow slog up the Coromandel into wind and tide we decided to return to Woolshed Bay for the day.

For those of you who are not familiar with boating – the weather is both the most important and the least important factor in boating.

Most important because we take the weather into account in every decision we make on when and where to go and where to anchor.

And least important because good or bad we still have a good time. Sailing on a beam reach in 10-15 knot winds is fantastic – no doubt about it! But being in a protected bay in a storm is also good – Zinkwazi is warm and dry and we’ve plenty to do. We’ve ridden out some very big storms in protected bays.

So we have had a very relaxed day reading and napping. I’ve done some tidying up and the usual cooking. I’ve had bait rod out – we did not bring any bait – but no luck in catching any sprats. Hopefully we’ll pick up a kahawai on our lures and then we can use it as bait. We also went for a kayak – have friends also anchored up in bay so did some visiting.

We had leftover meatballs on muffins with cheese on top – grilled – very good. Tea was sausages (Soggybottom at Hamilton market make very good sausages) and roast vegetables. Easy to make – use all, or a selection of, potatoes, carots, courgettes, mushrooms, scalopini, onion, garlic cloves. Cut into serving size pieces, spray with olive oil and sprinkle with dried basil or other herbs. Cover with sliced tomotoes and bake until potatoes are crisp. If fresh tomato is not available I substitute tinned chopped tomatoes.
